Training Urban Foresters & Tree Professionals

In today's world of urban tree canopy management there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each municipality and situation has its own set of constraints and variables. In order to make an informed decision about how to utilize a given tree stem, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the processes that will determine the end product.

Our Training

This one day, hands-on training will help Urban Foresters and Tree Professionals build the skills necessary to make informed decisions about how they can utilize tree stems to there highest use in any given market and how to find and create higher uses and better markets.

The training builds on the success of the Hardwood Value Improvement Project (HVIP), a USDAFS Wood Education and Research Center project that trained loggers to improve their value recovery from hardwood tree stems. It focuses on recognizing and understanding defects in logs and lumber, principals of manufacturing high quality logs, easy to remember rules of thumb, and whenever possible, a demonstration of the primary breakdown of logs into lumber. It incorporates both classroom and outdoor learning in the form of slide shows, demonstration and hands on practice in basic lumber grades, recognizing defects, log grading, scaling, recognizing high quality logs and basic conversion of logs to lumber.

Who Should Attend?

Urban Foresters, Arborists, Tree Professionals, Resource Managers, Naturalists, Park Managers, or anyone involved with the management of the urban tree canopy that has a desire to find more sustainable methods for utilizing urban trees.
